The joy is in the playing

I mentioned to my piano teacher that I had replayed Super Mario Odyssey recently, and he asked if I had tried to 100% it. I laughed and said no, I don't really have the time to 100% games these days. He replied with this comic:

A peanuts comic where Linus explains that he plays piano because he enjoys it, not to become rich and famous.

Why play a game if you're not going to 100% it? Why play piano if you're never going to be rich and famous?

"The joy is in the playing."

I really like that thought-technology, so I tucked it away in Obsidian for safe keeping. A few days later, a post from Ana Rodrigues came through my RSS Reader in which she had been grappling with a similar question. Before she could even post about it she came across Jim Nielsen having the same reflection.

In the process of trying to add my voice to their chorus, I realized I had already been exposed to a sibling of this idea from Kurt Vonnegut (by way of Ian McKellen).

It's not just okay to make a website, make art, or rescue the princess; it is critical to do things we enjoy because we enjoy them.

The joy is in the playing.
